Do you sometimes struggle to get the film to catch in the take-up spool? How do you load a 35mm film camera correctly? What is a take-up spool?!?

We've all been there, trust me. For beginners, correctly loading your 35mm film into your camera can be a difficult task. Fear not, by following these steps, with some practice and patience, you'll be able to load film with ease! In this guide, we will be using an Olympus Mju II 115 VF. Please follow along and adjust the steps to your camera setup.

1. Choosing the right 35mm film.

Before starting, make sure to select the right 35mm film for you. Depending the type of photography vibe you're going for, do you want to shoot black and white or colour? Do you want film that verstatile or showcases specific colours better? These are things to all consider before loading a roll of film into your 35mm film camera. Additionally, most film cameras can interchange 35mm film but double-check your camera to see if there are any specific requirements.

2. Open the back cover and insert your 35mm Film.

Locate the latch or button that allows you to open the back of the camera. This is usually on the bottom or the side of the camera. Slide it or press it to release the back cover. Take your 35mm film and insert it into the film chamber. The film should slide in smoothly with the film leader facing toward the take-up spool.

3. Pull the Film Leader Across.

Unroll a small portion of the film from the canister, and align the film leader with the take-up spool. The take-up spool is usually opposite the chamber where you inserted the film canister.

4. Advance the Film.

Close the camera's back cover securely. Most point-and-shoot cameras will automatically advance the film when you close the back. If your camera has one, wait until you see the frame counter advances to "1". If the film leader is not properly secured, the film will not advance. This will be shown on your frame counter, which will typically display 'E' indicating that the film chamber is empty. Open and re-adjust the film leader until your film advances.

5. Start Shooting

Your camera is now locked and loaded and ready to shoot film! Simply frame your shot, press the shutter button, and take your photos!

So there you are! You are now able to load your 35mm film into your film camera without any hiccups! Please remember some point-and-shoot film cameras may have different or unique loading mechanisms or features so please double-check that you are loading your film correctly. Additionally, be cautious when opening the camera back when you have any film loaded, as exposing the film to light can ruin your shots. Always load film in a shaded or indoor area to minimize the risk of light leaks.
