The Short Answer

  • Most common faults: a lens that sticks or stays extended, film that doesn't wind evenly, a dead flash, and battery compartment damage.
  • Can they be fixed? Sometimes, but parts are scarce and the weather seals can't easily be replaced. Buying a good one beats repairing a bad one.
  • How to avoid trouble: use the checklist below, ask what was tested, and buy with a warranty.

The Olympus Mju II is a brilliant little 35mm camera, but it's now around 30 years old and made mostly of plastic. Things wear out, and the listing rarely mentions it. Knowing the common Olympus Mju II problems means you can spot them before you pay, or avoid them after you do.

We're not here to scare you off. Plenty of Mju IIs shoot beautifully. Here's what actually goes wrong, and what to do about it.

The Most Common Olympus Mju II Problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Lens stays extended or won't open Sticky lens barrier or mechanism, weak battery or broken flex cable ribbon Try a fresh battery. If it persists, it needs a repairer
Missing or overlapping frames Film advance or frame sensor problem Don't buy it. Test with a roll or ask for sample photos
Flash won't fire or charge Worn flash circuit/capacitor Fine if you never use flash. Otherwise avoid
Hazy viewfinder Breakdown, delamination, or liquefaction of internal optical adhesives, coatings, or sealants Inspect before buying
Blurry photos Dirty lens or autofocus drifting off Check sample photos from that exact camera
Crack in camera body Plastic fatigue or a drop Walk away. It's fragile and hard to replace

1. The Lens Stays Extended or Won't Open

When you open the sliding cover, the lens should extend smoothly and retract when you close it. Photrio forum members have described Mju IIs where the lens stays extended, which is usually a sign of a sticky mechanism. Always try a fresh battery first, because a weak one can cause strange behaviour.

2. Missing or Overlapping Frames

The Mju II uses sensors to track the film. When they misbehave, you get frames that overlap or big gaps between photos. You won't see it until the film is developed, so it's one to ask about before buying, not after.

Pro Tip: Ask the seller whether a roll has been shot through the camera, not just whether it "winds on". Frame spacing only shows up on developed film.

3. The Flash Stops Working

A flash that won't charge or fire is one of the most reported faults on 90s compacts. If you shoot mostly outdoors, a dead flash might not matter. For indoor and night photos, it will.

Safety note: don't open the camera yourself. The flash holds a charge that can give you a nasty shock, even with the battery out.

4. Battery Compartment Damage and Leaks

The battery door is the Mju II's best-known weak spot. Casual Photophile's James Tocchio calls the film door and clamshell switch a little flimsy, and Christie Fitzpatrick of Field Mag flags the battery door too. A cracked door, tape or corrosion inside is a red flag. A leaking battery can damage the electronics.

5. Perished Weather Seals

Keep a vintage MJU II dry. Do not assume its original weather resistance still applies. Avoid rain, splashes and wet bags.

6. Autofocus Quirks

The autofocus is one of the Mju II's best features, but it isn't perfect. It can struggle with reflective surfaces and low-contrast scenes, and there's a short delay of around a quarter of a second between pressing the button and the shot. If your photos come out soft across the board, the lens may be dirty or the focus may have drifted.

How to Look After Your Mju II

  • Remove the battery for storage: if you won't shoot for weeks, take it out. This is the simplest way to prevent leaks.
  • Be gentle with the doors: slide the lens cover and open the film door without forcing them.
  • Keep it dry: weather-resistant doesn't mean rainproof.
  • Use a fresh CR123A battery: weak batteries cause odd behaviour that looks like a fault.
  • Shoot a roll early: use your first roll to check the camera's results and report any suspected fault promptly. Check the warranty policy for coverage and exclusions. New to film? See how to load 35mm film, or our Mju II tips for the best photos.

Olympus Mju II Problems FAQ

Is the Olympus Mju II reliable?

Many are, but it's an old, plastic camera, so condition matters more than reputation. A serviced, tested unit with a warranty is a much safer buy than an untested one.

Can I repair a Mju II myself?

We don't recommend it. The flash circuit can hold a charge, and parts are hard to find.

Why is my Mju II lens stuck?

Try a fresh CR123A battery first. If the lens still won't move, the mechanism likely needs a repairer.

Is the Mju II waterproof?

Do not treat a vintage MJU II as waterproof. Keep it dry and avoid rain, splashes and submersion.
